International Exchange

Where Arts Become a Bridge Between Cultures.

Experience America Through Arts, Culture & Education.

A journey beyond the stage. An opportunity beyond borders.

The Washington International Arts Festival (WIAF) International Exchange Program connects young artists, arts educators, schools, and cultural organizations through performance, education, and meaningful cross-cultural engagement.

Based in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area, WIAF welcomes international delegations to experience the United States through artistic participation, professional learning, cultural exploration, and opportunities to connect with American students, educators, and communities.

Participants do more than visit a new country. They share their artistic traditions, encounter different perspectives, develop new relationships, and discover how the arts can bring people together across cultures.

WIAF / International Exchange

Why International Exchange?

A Journey That Goes Beyond the Performance.

For young artists, international exchange can create a different kind of learning experience—one that connects artistic development with cultural understanding, global perspective, and personal growth.

For schools and arts institutions, it offers an opportunity to expand educational experiences beyond the classroom and build relationships with institutions, educators, and communities in another country.

FOR STUDENTS

Perform. Learn. Discover. Connect.

Students may gain opportunities to:

  • Perform or compete within an international arts festival environment.

  • Participate in masterclasses and learn from invited artists and educators.

  • Exchange ideas and experiences with American students and other international participants.

  • Explore American history, culture, education, and civic life through curated learning experiences.

  • Develop communication, adaptability, collaboration, and intercultural awareness.

  • Build friendships and professional relationships that extend beyond a single event.

FOR TEACHERS & ARTS EDUCATORS

Expand Your Students' Learning Environment.

International participation can create opportunities for teachers to observe different performance settings, engage with artistic professionals, exchange perspectives with other educators, and give students experiences that complement their ongoing training.

Participating educators also play an important role in helping students prepare their work, navigate unfamiliar environments, and reflect on what they learn.

FOR SCHOOLS & INSTITUTIONS

Bring International Opportunities into Your Educational Mission.

WIAF works with arts schools, international schools, youth organizations, and cultural institutions interested in developing meaningful exchange opportunities.

Participation can help institutions:

  • Provide students with international performance or competition experiences.

  • Strengthen their arts education and international learning programs.

  • Introduce their artistic traditions to new audiences.

  • Build relationships with educators and organizations in the United States.

  • Explore future collaboration in arts education, teacher development, and cultural exchange.

FOR INTERNATIONAL PARTNERS

Build Relationships That Can Grow Beyond One Visit.

WIAF seeks to develop reciprocal partnerships in which organizations contribute their knowledge, cultural perspectives, and local expertise while exploring opportunities for continued exchange.

Our goal is not simply to bring international visitors to Washington. It is to build a network that creates meaningful opportunities for people and institutions to learn from one another over time.

Two Participation Pathways

WIAF offers two proposed participation pathways for international delegations. Each pathway is designed around a different artistic objective and can be discussed with participating schools and organizations to determine the most appropriate program structure.

Program activities, dates, eligibility, and participation arrangements are confirmed through the applicable program information and written agreement.

The experience can provide a structured pathway through artistic submission, adjudication, live performance, and recognition, complemented by cultural and educational activities available through the festival program.

WHAT STUDENTS GAIN

More Than a Trip. A Broader Perspective.

ARTISTIC EXPERIENCE

Participants may gain experience presenting their work in a different performance or competition environment and engaging with new artistic approaches.

CULTURAL UNDERSTANDING

Direct interaction with people from different backgrounds creates opportunities to ask questions, exchange ideas, and develop more informed perspectives.

CONFIDENCE & COMMUNICATION

Navigating an unfamiliar environment, working with new peers, and participating in educational activities can encourage adaptability, communication, and confidence.

GLOBAL PERSPECTIVE

Exposure to cultural institutions, educational settings, and different approaches to the arts can help students connect their own experiences to a wider world.

RELATIONSHIPS & COMMUNITY

Shared artistic and educational experiences can create friendships, professional connections, and opportunities for future collaboration.

PERSONAL REFLECTION

Participants can return home with new questions, ideas, experiences, and perspectives that enrich their continued development as artists and young people.

WIAF aims to support these outcomes through intentional program design, organized participation, and meaningful opportunities for interaction. Individual outcomes depend on the program, each participant's engagement, and the activities completed.

Delegation Support & Safeguarding

Thoughtfully Planned. Clearly Coordinated.

International travel involving young people requires careful preparation, defined responsibilities, and clear communication among the organizer, participating institution, parents or legal guardians, and accompanying adults.

WIAF works with participating organizations to develop an appropriate program plan and clarify the scope of services before travel arrangements are finalized.

Pre-Travel Coordination

Support may include communication about program eligibility, registration, audition or competition requirements, itinerary planning, participant information, documentation requirements, and pre-departure preparation.

Where appropriate, WIAF may provide program confirmation or supporting documents related to participation. Such documents do not guarantee visa issuance or admission to the United States.

Accommodation & Transportation Coordination

Depending on the agreed program, WIAF may assist with planning or coordinating accommodation options, local ground transportation, venue transfers, and travel logistics.

The itinerary will clarify which arrangements are included, which are coordinated separately, and which remain the responsibility of the participating institution or family.

On-site Program Coordination

WIAF coordinates confirmed festival activities and communicates relevant schedules, venue information, arrival instructions, and points of contact.

For group activities, the roles of the program coordinator, delegation leader, teachers, chaperones, and other responsible adults should be established before arrival.

Minor Safeguarding & Supervision

Programs involving minors require clear supervision and safeguarding arrangements.

Before participation, the relevant parties should agree on:

  • Parent or legal guardian consent and required participant information.

  • Designated delegation leaders and chaperone responsibilities.

  • Participant check-in, attendance, and group communication procedures.

  • Emergency contact information and incident escalation procedures.

  • Relevant medical, dietary, accessibility, or other support needs.

  • Applicable conduct expectations, photography permissions, and privacy requirements.

WIAF will clarify the safeguarding arrangements applicable to each approved activity. Accompanying institutions and designated adults retain the responsibilities assigned to them in the written program arrangements.

Emergercy & Contigency Planning

Program planning should identify emergency contacts, procedures for medical or safety incidents, communication during disruptions, and appropriate contingency arrangements.

Travel insurance, medical coverage, visa costs, international airfare, hotel expenses, meals, and other travel-related items must be addressed in the written itinerary or program agreement rather than assumed to be included.

CLEAR RESPONSIBILITIES & CONFIRMED SERVICES

Before a delegation commits to travel, WIAF and the participating organization will clarify the program scope, responsibilities, schedules, services, payment arrangements, cancellation terms, and other applicable conditions.

This approach helps ensure that students, parents, educators, and institutions understand what has been arranged and what remains their responsibility.
